A watchdog timer (WDT) is a specialized electronic or software countdown timer used to detect and recover from computer malfunctions. It acts as a safety failsafe by continuously counting down to zero. If the main software is running correctly, it must regularly reset or “kick” the timer to restart the countdown. If the software freezes, encounters an infinite loop, or crashes, it fails to reset the timer. When the countdown reaches zero, the watchdog “barks” and triggers a hardware system reset to restore normal operations. Core Modes of Operation Википедия Сторожевой таймер – Википедия
